Seniors: It's a Wonderful Life!

By Robert A. Sagar

MAUMEE- Life is good!

Why? Because it has never been more possible to live longer and better than today. The average lifespan is approaching 80 years and increases every year as medical science finds new and better ways to prolong our lives. Along with extended lifespan comes expanded opportunities, and the challenge for many of us as we grow older is to ensure we don't let those opportunities pass us by.

Sir Isaac Newton said that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The Bible tells us that as we sow, so shall we reap. Both refer to a simple truth: what you put in, you get out. For everything you do or fail to do, something happens, or fails to happen. This is especially true in the areas of health, relationships and finances.

Your health and longevity are very much under your own control. Aside from genetic predispositions to physical problems or unforeseeable accidents, you have the power to influence not only how long you live, but the quality of the years ahead of you.

I like to call this philosophy Living a Wonderful Life, and it serves as a foundational element to the financial planning I do on behalf of my clients.

Living a wonderful life is easy, and it is never too late to start. All you need to do is decide you want to do it, then follow these 10 simple steps:
- Always look on the bright side. Maintain a positive attitude toward yourself, your life, and the people around you. Studies show that the more positive you are, the more energy you will have, the stronger your immune system will be and the more resistive you will be to illnesses that drag others down.
- Get proper exercise. Keep yourself physically fit. No, you don't have to be Charles Atlas, but pay attention to diet and nutrition, then exercise. Go for a walk. The best exercise program is 30 to 60 minutes long, three to five times a week. You will be amazed how much better you feel.
- Stay in "the game." Plan and participate in social activities with the important people in your life. Remain connected and vital by staying actively involved in your church, political party, business association, civic group, community clubs or personal interest groups.
- Do something special with your time. Actively build and cultivate happy relationships with others. Don't forget that relationships are central to your health, happiness and living a wonderful life.
- Learn something new each day. Engage in regular "mental exercise." Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body. The more active your mind, the more energy you have, and the healthier you are.
- Eat for health and energy. The best diet for health, vigor and long life consists of lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lots of water. Restrict your intake of fats, salts, sugars, carbohydrates and white flour products.
- Take care of Number 1 -- You! You are your most valuable asset. Your time and your life are your most precious resource. Love your mind and your body and take good care of both. Proper rest and recreation will add years of quality living to your life.
- Put your best foot forward. This is a great world to live in. Look for the good in every situation and the good in every person. Believe tomorrow will be the best day of your life and that the best experiences are yet to come.
- Get connected to the world. If you haven't already, make the decision right this minute to develop skills to become computer literate and Internet fluent. This will allow you to connect with family, friends, news and events around the world.
- Stop worrying and start living. Research tells us that the happiest and most successful people take a long-term, big-picture view of life, rather than being mired in the details and turmoil of each day. Most of the things we worry most about never materialize anyway, so why bother?
This is the very best time in history to be alive. What are you going to do to get the most out of it? Resolve today that you are going to live a long and happy life, then do everything you know to make your resolution come true.
